Hewett Academy are celebrating their GCSE results today with 63% of grades 9-4 and 44% 9-5 grades across Maths and English, proving to be an outstanding year for the school.

Whilst Hewett Academy is delighted to have seen an increase in results vs. last year, as Ofqual announced last week, the return to pre-pandemic grading means nationally results will be lower than last summer and therefore it will be most meaningful to compare to the results of 2019. Therefore, when comparing this year’s results vs. 2019’s results, Hewett Academy has seen an increase of 16% in 9-4 English and Maths grades and a huge increase of 20% for 5+ grades.

The atmosphere was electric throughout the school this morning, as excited students arrived with friends and family members to receive their results and celebrate together before starting their next chapter.

Hewett Academy, which is due to go through a period of modernisation, is extremely proud of all that its students have achieved and plans to build upon the school’s continued success, creating even more fantastic opportunities for its pupils and building on its strong community partnerships.

Antony Little, Principal of The Hewett Academy, said:

“There is such joy here at these fantastic outcomes and no students deserve them more than the Hewett Year 11 of 2023. This group of young people has faced the challenges of COVID with steely determination and hard work that is a credit to both them and their supportive families. With so many Hewett students now going on to sixth forms like Sir Isaac Newton, we know their futures are bright.

The staff at the school have been incredible with them this year, going the extra mile and proving that they will do whatever it takes to support our students. Year 11 has been so wonderful to work with, we shall miss them enormously and wish them all the best.”

This year, the school has seen some particularly exceptional individual outcomes, with students exceeding their expected grades, enabling them to progress to their next chosen stage of education. This includes Year 11 student Monty Ives-O’Brien who achieved all passes, including 2 grade 9s and 4 grade 8s. Monty has also achieved the distinction of obtaining a double grade 9 in Science - the first time in Hewett Academy history that this has been achieved. He dropped only a handful of marks across six exam papers in three sciences and deserves massive credit for his hard work and tenacity.

Ini Osupala arrived from Nigeria in Year 10 and has walked away with incredible grades including a 7 and 6 in Science, a 7 in Maths and a 5 in English after less than two years in the country. Similarly, Samia Anika arrived during Year 10 from Bangladesh speaking very little English. At Hewett Academy, Samia had to focus on both learning the language and doing her academic subjects - and she has done brilliantly with a 5 in Maths, double grade 4 in Science, a 4 in Geography and a 3 in English.

For many students, the results today have secured their places at sixth form, including two of the top sixth forms in the county, Jane Austen College Sixth Form and Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form, both of which are part of the Inspiration Trust.

For several other students, their results have confirmed their plans to begin apprenticeships or employment.

Millie Duffield who has plans to join the RAF, says:

“I’m feeling relieved and happy with my results. I’ve got everything I need for any doors that I want to go through and any career path I want to do when I’m older. In the future, I want to become a pilot but right now I’m going to be a Regiment Gunner in the RAF.”

Hewett Academy will be hosting their annual Open Day on Tuesday 26th September from 6pm to 8.30pm, as well as Open Mornings from Monday 2nd October to Friday 6th October. They encourage those interested in applying for the school, to attend for a tour of the school’s fantastic facilities, and to speak to current students, teachers, and the Principal.
