Backstage Tour at Norwich Theatre Royal
Back
Fourteen Year 9 pupils from Hewett Academy were recently invited to the iconic Norwich Theatre Royal for a backstage tour whilst 'An Inspector Calls' was in residence.
The pupils who attended the tour had previously demonstrated an interest in drama, particularly the technical aspects of the subject, presenting a perfect opportunity to learn more about the theatre and how shows are run backstage. The guides took the time to show pupils the usually hidden areas of the theatre, including the stage door, costume area, technical corridor and the huge backstage space where the group learnt how shows are 'brought in' to the theatre when on tour. Some shows use as many as 2 to 3 lorries for transportation!
Next on the tour was the stage itself, where pupils spent some time to learn about the set for 'An Inspector Calls' - some parts of which are nearly 30 years old, originally used for the production in 1996! The group had an opportunity to ask lots of brilliant questions, to which the guide commented that "[we were] the best tour group he had had in a very long time" due to their attentiveness and desire to learn! They are very excited to return to see an actual production.
Drama teacher, Ms Hart, commented that
"I feel very grateful that we attend a school with such a fabulous location in a city with so many wonderful theatres, where pupils can have first-hand experience of performances and shows"
Keep a look out for future trips to the Norwich Theatre Royal!
